EMERGENCY NOTIFICATIONS

There are many emergency mass notification communication tools available to residents and businesses in Los Angeles County.  A few examples of these tools include the following:

Alert LA County

Alert LA County is an opt-in mass notification program utilized by the County of Los Angeles that allows individuals to receive emergency alerts by text, email and/or phone call. Alert LA County has accessibility features for people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs. Once registered, add the Alert LA County telephone numbers to your contacts.

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA)

WEA messages go directly to your cellphone, and are used to send out urgent alert and warning messages targeting certain geographic areas. WEAs look like text messages but are designed to get your attention with a unique sound and vibration repeated twice. To be sure that your phone is able to receive a WEA if an event requires it, verify that the appropriate settings are enabled on your phone (default setting is typically enabled, but specific considerations vary by device).

Emergency Alert System (EAS)

The EAS broadcasts emergency information directly to radio and television carriers. This system provides the President the ability to address the nation during national emergency, but can also be utilized by the County to broadcast emergency information during widespread (countywide or regional) emergency events.  When an EAS message is broadcast, normal programming on that channel will be interrupted to provide emergency information in the form of an audio message and a text crawl or display on televisions. Regular programming will resume after the message ends.

Participants in the EAS include radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers, and wireline video providers. Locally, some radio stations called Local Primaries have agreed to broadcast messages from the County and relay those messages to other local stations that can voluntarily rebroadcast them on their own channels.

Local Primary stations for Los Angeles County include:

    • Local Primary 2: KROQ (106.7 FM) and KCBS (93.1 FM)

Weather Radio Alerts

In partnership with the National Weather Service, Weather Radio Alerts are used to expand alerts in hazard areas, especially in areas with poor cellphone coverage. Weather Radios that use Specific Area Message Encoding (S.A.M.E.) technology can be programmed for use in Los Angeles County and a limited number of pre-programmed radios have been distributed. Cities, special districts, employers, schools and universities may each have their own emergency notification systems.  Make sure you research which systems are available where you live and work, and sign up so that you are informed when there is a local emergency.
